“And you will recognize Him by this sign: you will find the baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger. Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others -the armies of heaven – praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.’” Luke 2:12-14 

Christmas: the brilliance of God on full display. God incarnate placed in the arms of the outcast and poor. On the night Jesus was born, to overlook the poor was to risk missing God altogether. Sadly, many did.

But we don’t have to.

Jesus is so often found where we expect him least but always where we need him most. Our friends in the cemeteries of East Java have taught us this. God walks among them, comes into their living rooms, and answers their prayers.

Time and time again, the answer has come through you.

You are invited into the cemeteries again this Christmas.

It’s only dark until morning comes.

And Christmas day is near.
